How to Quickly Initiate DIY Slipcovers with These 8 Essential Tools?

Slipcovers aren’t that complicated and only require a few basic tools. Though there are other tools that you can buy if you find slipcovering is a hobby you enjoy.

  1. For starters you will need a sewing maching. This heavy duty singer will do the trick as long as you are using light to medium weight fabric. It will do well with linen and twill.Because I sew everyday I have invested in an inductrial Juki machine like this one, which has severed me well for many years.

2. Thread: Rather than using the standard weight thread make sure to invest in a nylon or a upholstery weight thread for your project. This nylon thread comes in many colors and it very durable for slipcovers.

3 & 4.    A 6″ x 24″ quilters ruler is ideal for marking all the measurement on your fabric. I love the dimensions of this ruler because you can use it for making bias strips for your piping. Use tailors chalk for all the markings you make on the fabric and make sure to do this on the back side.

5. A standard 60″ fabric measuring tape or longer is also necessary for measuring all the curves and corners.

6. Cutting tools: You can use your regular sewing fabric scissors. After several years of slipcovers I also invested in a rotary cutter which saved a lot of time and manual labor.

7. Many slipcovers require zipper for cushions. Also some chairs and couches need a zipper in the back corner for easier removal of the cover. Rather than buying individual zippers purchase a length of zipper that you can cut to length like this 3 yard length .

8. Needles – be sure to use a heavier needle as well when sewing slipcovers. Size 18 is ideal.
