Over the past few weeks my heart has been disturbed by controversy. There isn’t much that disturbs my peace more than controversy.
This time the controversy wasn’t with a client or with my children, it was something outside of all that.
When these things crop up I find myself going over conversations in my mind or writing letters in my head trying to appeal to the other to find a way to overcome. I want so much for it to be smoothed out immediately. A friend reminded me of Isaiah 30. As I read the passage two verses spoke to my heart Isaiah 30:15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. Isaiah 30:18 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

This waiting can look like different things. What I have found is that waiting on God is also a discipline of the mind. When I can’t do anything my mind turns busy trying to project possible outcomes but this is not waiting or resting in God. To actually rest in God implies that I have put my trust in His ability rather than my own. Resting means that I also have to make my thoughts rest. To do this I must be aware of what I am thinking and also be well versed in the promises of God. It is the promises of God that tell me His character, that tell me the outcome. Rather than thinking about what ‘could’ happen from my perspective I am given the opportunity to look from God’s perspective, and to embrace His perspective as truth. He is in control, His timing is perfect, His thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Over and over we all must train ourselves in this battle over our thoughts. If we want God’s peace it is a fight to focus our minds on His promises, believing Him more than our own natural instinct.
No matter what the controversy, I know that I need to bring my thoughts back into focus on Him. He is bigger than this.
Controversy in life is inevitable because you can’t please everyone.
Over the years there have been times when I haven’t been able to please a client. I want to defend myself but the truth is we just may not see eye to eye on a project and it is better to give a soft answer.
If you are facing controversy take notice of where your thoughts are and how you can surrender those to God’s truth.
A few helpful books for the battle of the mind are listed below. This have helped me tremendously over the years with this issue.
