3 Ways to Fix a Broken Strap on a Purse

Learn how to fix a broken strap on a purse rather than throw it away

Do you have a favorite purse of hand bag that broke? We’ve all had it happen at one time or another.

It leaves one with a few options to consider.

  •  Leave the bag in a back closet and pretend it never happened
  •  Throw it away
  •  Learn to fix it.

Choosing to fix what is broken rather than throw it away creates a more sustainable environment and eco friendly solution. Besides that it also will save money over the long term.

Often the strap breaks at the connection point like this purse.

Other times it is the actual strap that breaks or parts of the hardware. Straps can be replaced as long as there are rings attached. Replacement straps like the ones below can be purchased from Amazon.

For the Non-Sewers

Depending on the type of strap there is the potential to glue on the strap with gorilla glue.

In Order to secure the Strap Use Nylon Webbing

The best bet it to use nylon webbing to secure the strap which is what I used in this particular case.

I wanted to match the strap as best as possible so I picked a dark gray. After I machine stitched the strap down I hand stitched the broken piece over top of the stitches I made in the nylon strap (which you can see in this instagram reel)

Pro Tip:

When sewing a strap use nylon thread or upholstery thread because it is sturdier than all purpose thread.

The purse in this video has a different style strap, as it inserts into the side seam. For a home sewing machine it may be challenging to sew through so many layers of fabric. Hand stitching is a great alterative, especially as there is not a long length of sewing needed. If you do sew this job by hand I would highly recommend using a thimble to save your fingers a little.
